Extra courses let you plan your ideal schedule without worrying about conflicts with required courses.
RPI Scheduler is a free program to help RPI students schedule their courses. The latest version is 2011, which includes course data for the RPI Spring 2011 semester.
Who updates it? The Scheduler is an unofficial way to plan your schedule for next semester. This site is run by an RPI graduate who is not associated with the RPI registrar.
How does it work? Use it to find courses you want to take and see when those courses are offered. Then narrow down Scheduler's results until you find the schedule that's perfect for you.

If you can parse http://sis.rpi.edu/reg/rocs/201101.xml and convert it to something that looks like http://rpischeduler.com/install/run/out.schedb your fellow students will love you!
You can use any programming language you like, I really don't care. If it's Java or Python, though, maybe we could set up an automatic parser cron job on Google App Engine...
